This magic stings!

Stinging nettles is one of my favorite herbs. It is one of those magic plants that just gives!

Especially beneficial for women, here is a "short" excerpt from Dr. Christopher:
"Stinging nettle is an astringent, diuretic, tonic, anodyne, pectoral, rubefacient, styptic, anthelmintic, nutritive, alterative, hemetic, anti-rheumatic, anti-allergenic, anti-lithic/lithotriptic, haemostatic, stimulant, decongestant, herpatic, febrifuge, kidney depurative/nephritic, galactagogue, hypoglycemic, expectorant, anti-spasmodic, and anti-histamine.

Nettle leaf is among the most valuable herbal remedies.  Because of its many nutrients, stinging nettle is traditionally used as a spring tonic.  It is a slow-acting nutritive herb that gently cleanses the body of metabolic wastes.  It is one of the safest alteratives, especially in the treatment of chronic disorders that require long-term treatment.  It has a gentle, stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, enhancing the excretion of wastes through the kidneys.

Nettle’s iron content makes it a wonderful blood builder, and the presence of vitamin C aids in the iron absorption.  As a hemetic (an herb rich in iron), this is an excellent herb for anemia and fatigue, especially in women.  It “promotes the process of protein transanimation in the liver, effectively utilizing digested proteins, while simultaneously preventing them from being discharged through the body as waste products.”

WOW! Right?

There are many creative ways to incorporate the beautiful Nettle into your body, I prefer infusions. Simple. I put a handful of dry nettles in a quart size mason jar and cover with boiling water. Cover and let stand overnight. Strain the next morning and drink throughout the day. Voila!
P.S. The only place I get dry nettles is at Mountain Rose Herbs.
When you purchase dry nettles, make sure they are DARK green, and smell earthy. Anything that is grayish, or does not smell is usually old. It will not have the same healing properties. You can get a huge bag at Mountain Rose for under $10.

You can be adventurous and pick your own Nettles. Yes, I think that is crazy, but I have done it and it is also very fulfilling to talk to Nettle and ask her to spare you the sting, thanking her for her healing as you pick :). Make sure to educate yourself before you go, and wear thick gloves!

AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST!!
I love Nettles during the spring. It is a wonderful spring tonic, but my biggest secret is that she saves us from allergies. Yep. When the first blossoms come out, we Nettle up.

I even give my fabulous Rex dry nettles. Last year, my dog started shaking his head violently, and licking his paws. I ended up taking him to the vet, as his ears and paws were bothering him and getting raw. The vet noticed that I had been there the same time of year (almost to the day) a few years back, with the same symptons. Why not the years in between? Duh! I was giving Rex Nettles RIGHT at the beginning of allergy season. $150 later, equipped with chemical war fare to help him heal, I swore to put him on a regime.

So, I simply put a handful of dry Nettle into about a cup of wet dog food. He will gulp it down because he never gets canned food and this is a treat :). You can put it in anything wet: egg, make your food, etc.  Start with a little first to see if your dog will tolerate it.  It is worth a try, and has saved me lots of $$'s!

Drink yourself beautiful....

I am not talking about the "Drink a few beers and turn down the lights" type of beauty remedy...today :). No sister, I am talking about the fabulous, inexpensive, Wild Woman way. Have you ever noticed how Wild Women are always radiant? They shine, even at a very wise age. I will bet some big $$'s that is not a chemical peel, botox, or expensive cream that keeps them looking that way.

Meet Nettles, Clover, Oatstraw & their sisters.

Now is the perfect time to get into an infusion routine. Infusions make excellent cool summer drinks. Not only will your skin & hair thank you, your beautiful organs will SING with joy. Okay, I am getting a bit carried away, but seriously, herbal infusions flush toxins out of your body, rejuvenating your cells. Stay consistant for 6 weeks, and you will notice a change, inside & out. It is not as quick as drinking beer and turning off the lights, but you will feel much better, Goddess :).

I am a creature of convenience, and as always, I will share my simple way to make it happen.

Before you go to bed, boil water, but a few fat pinches (or about 1/4 cup) of herbs in a quart size mason jar, cover with water, close, and let stand overnight. The next morning, strain into another mason jar, screw closed, start sipping, or put some ice in if you like it cold. If you finish that mason jar, you will look & feel even MORE fabulous after just a few days. BTW, if you have a teenager, this is the BEST way to avoid acne. My 14 yr old always goes for the Nettles....Just make half gallon jars, and double the herbs. The measurements are only a guide, adjust to taste. I actually make my infusions really strong, since we all LOVE the taste...no sweeteners added, not even the kids.

Here are some of my favorite herbs to infuse:
`Nettles (good for everything woman)
`Nettles, Oatstraw & Horsetail (Minerals galore, and great for the nerves. Horsetails does wonders for hair & nails)
`Health Tea, makes the most excellent ice tea:Strawberry leaf, Red clover, Fennel, Damiana, Sweet Woodruff

I get all my herbs at Mountain Rose Herbs if I don't grow them in my yard. Check out the big bags, it is well worth the extra $$'s. I will also be offering the mixes via mail for a small donation if you don't want to make them yourself. Just message me :). My tip: make any mixes in batches, so that all you have to do is scoop them out.

Happy Beauty Brewing!
Much love,
Heike

Herbs that speak. Bring Magik into your kitchen......

This morning I already knew it would be an interesting day :). I am on a learning journey, and my first lessons are about letting go of what does not work in order to let in the new. But that is another post....or posts...that will go under "Journey" at the Goddess's Daily Groove :). Becoming more "aware".....

Back to my kitchen.

Two sick kids, who came back from camp with something that is a cross between a serious head/chest cold and allergies (which we don't have.). I went to the pantry to get herbs for tea, and the first thing that called me was Hibiscus. Then Rosehips, both of them fabulous for Vitamin C, and a general "feel good pick me up". Another plus is that their taste is attracting to kids. As I placed them in the pot, Nettles called me. I did not hesitate, though the combination of the fresh, tangy taste of the first two, and green taste of Nettles seemed a bit strange. As I walked by a cabinet with my standard herbs, the Cassia chips (cinnamon) called sweetly: "Add me for the grounding taste, I will take care of their blood". The magic is happening, the tea is delicious. With a dollop of raw honey, I am sure it will attack those little bacteria sweetly, but with a strong hand. The first batch is warm, but the rest will be on ice and administered for the rest of the day :).

Open your kitchen to magic and healing food. There are lots of books & courses, but I invite you to go into your kitchen at night, when it is quiet & you are alone and uninhibited. Clean it, dance with it, sing to it...be happy in there. Turn on some candles while you work. Hang gathered herbs to dry. Only bring in food that are healthy and authentic, if possible. Kitchens are the hub of life of our houses. They nourish us, not just with food. If you don't have on yet, invite a Kitchen Witch into your home (some shameless advertising there, but my Witches truly bring laughter & good magik into your kitchen :)..).

Now you are ready to "hear" your kitchen, and its' inhabitants :). When you nourish, when you need healing; you will know which foods & herbs to choose. Be open, they may seem strange, but you can trust that your kitchen will take care of you.

Today's Healing Tea:
A big pot, filled with water that has boiled.
1 handful of Hibiscus flowers
1 smaller handful of Rosehips
1 handful of Nettle leaves
1/4 handful :)...of Cinnamon chips (or a stick if you have one, not powder)
Sweeten with local honey, raw is good.
The tea will be thick, and should be drank warm. Then you can thin out with a bit of filtered water and drink it over ice :).

Let the magik begin!
Much love,
Heike

P.S. My water kefir grains are very promiscuous, and keep multiplying :). I am happy to share....
